Hi All,
I have a 250GB SATA harddisk with two 125GB ntfs primary partitions.
When I boot up my computer using a Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop CD from cdrom, I
could see my 2 ntfs partitions using the command "fdisk -l" in a root
terminal. But I could not mount any of these 2 partitions using the command
"mount -t ntfs /dev/sda1 /media/windows -o rw". The root terminal prints out
an error message : "ntfs-3g: Failed to access volume '/dev/sda1': No such
file or directory".
When I look into /dev, I could only find /dev/sda, but not /dev/sda1 or
/dev/sda2.
What additional procedure(s) should I perform to gain read / write
access to my 2 ntfs partitions. Any suggestion ?
Regards
Lawrence

First check your harddisk partition with `sudo fdisk -l` command...
Give me the output..

Hi Putu and All,
I think the problem may be due to some errors in my Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop
CD. I have just downloaded Ubuntu 8.04.4 Desktop CD and booted up my system
from this CD. The Ubuntu 8.04.4 system could recognize all my internal and
removable partitions now.
However, I find it difficult to download an "error-free" Ubuntu 9.10
Desktop CD from the Official Ubuntu website. I had downloaded at least 4
times this 9.10 CD from different locations in the Ubuntu download site, but
do not get even one "error-free" Ubuntu 9.10 CD !
Anyway, thanks.
Regards
Lawrence

Hi Putu and All,=A0=A0=A0=A0 I think the problem may be due to some=
errors in my Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop CD. I have just downloaded Ubuntu 8.04.4 =
Desktop CD and booted up my system from this CD. The Ubuntu 8.04.4 system c=
ould recognize all my internal and removable partitions now.
=A0=A0=A0=A0 However, I find it difficult to download an "error-fr=
ee" Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop CD from the Official Ubuntu website. I had dow=
nloaded at least 4 times this 9.10 CD from different locations in the Ubunt=
u download site, but do not get even one "error-free" Ubuntu 9.10=
CD !
=A0=A0=A0=A0 Anyway, thanks.RegardsLawrence=

First check your harddisk partition with `sudo fdisk -l` command...
Give me the output..

Is the problem in the download? Or the burning of the CD? After you do
the DL, try checking the md5sum of the ISO against the official
version. If that checks correctly, then the problem may be in the burn
process.

I am trying to think how you fail to get a good .iso from the
proper sites. This has never happened to me. Really odd. I
gather your still using Windows to d/l the file, can you think
of a reason it would ruin the .iso file?
Well now put the .iso on a cd-rom properly and you should be
in business.

um.
Bad luck & bad downloads? Wget should recover automatically but I have
seen situations where you still end up with a bad bit here or there.
The easiest method would be using the rsync protocol against one of
the mirrors.
For example:
rsync -avPc http://www.mirrorservice.org/sites/cdimage.ubuntu.com/cdimage/r=
eleases/9.10/release/ubuntu-9.10-dvd-amd64.iso
.
might do the trick, although probably will upset the site admin with
the usage of checksum (-c) option :) which would have detected any bad
bits during the download. The rest of the options above are show
progress (P), archive (sets the metadata as the same as the target
file, defaults to -rlptgoD options!) and more verbose (-v) than
usual.
The other best method would be using a good Bittorrent client which
would check all of the file against the torrent tracker and fix the
broken bits and pieces although some idiots in various administrations
still think P2P equals to illegal. :(
Downloading the torrent file from torrent.ubuntu.com
(http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#bt) and pointing it
to the existing suspect file should be enough but most clients have
the option of re-checking.

Another way to make sure you have a working iso is to use the torrents
for your iso from the ubuntu site. I downloaded mine at 2.5MBps (my
bandwidth cap) and torrenting programs now check and make sure the
data is correct with hashing and whatnot. So the only way to know it
absolutely works is to get the .torrent and it will be the right image
100% of the time, assuming you got the right torrent.

I am very happy for you. It has happened to other people and there are
ways around it.

Using FTP with ASCII protocol will be sufficient. Also a noisy and
pretty frequently dropping DSL line will cause issues, especially when
the file is resumed. Bad disc sectors can't help either and none of
these have anything to do with Linux or Windows. Firefox on Ubuntu
9.10 had corrupted a 600MB download I've done from IBM a couple of
days ago and it was completely my fault because I insisted on using my
frequently-dropping Blackberry's 3G connection instead of waiting for
the next day and using a more reliable network.

Thanks for the good advice. I shall always remember to put my ISO file

I shall always remember to put my ISO file
onto a cd-rom properly from now on.

Karl, you can get perfectly functional torrent clients that run on
Windows XP. The OS does not matter.

When you say "Now" Do you mean that it is fixed now? Or do you mean
that you have a "good" download, but it still does not work?
If solved, let us know.

Hi Patton and All,
Glad to have seen the many suggestions.
Yes, the download problem is now solved.
Previously, I used "http" in a Win XP platform to download the Ubuntu
9.10 Desktop iso file from the Official Ubuntu site, but the download failed
at least 4 times giving me an invalid iso to burn and try Ubuntu 9.10.
Finally, my download succeeded when still using "http" but in a Ubuntu
8.04.4 Desktop booted platform. I don't know what's the cause but now my
burned Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop CD passes the "check disk for defects" test.
It may be an occasional case. Thanks for the different more reliable
download methods suggested so that we could prevent getting into another
download trouble.
My "clean" Ubuntu 9.10 Desktop CD now boots fine in my computer.
However, as I have a pair of internal 250G harddisks attached to a "raid"
motherboard, the Ubuntu 9.10 booted system seems could not mount these two
disks correctly. But I think this is another issue and I would post this
problem in a new thread.
Regards
Lawrence
