Jaunty. Since the Karmic upgrade it has reappeared.
I say 'arbitrary', but it appears most commonly when starting up an
application, usually kontact or konqueror. It has happened while
entering data in konqueror, while importing feeds into akregator,
sometimes even while not doing anything at all, just letting the system
idle.
Running a GNOME session is problem-free.
I have searched Google for similar problems but have turned up little -
just enough to suggest that a few others have had the problem but that
it is not common. One suggested solution I tried was to set up a new
account and copy the new .local/share/mime directory to my main account.
This didn't help. I have tried disabling all plasmoids, disconnecting
all USB devices, setting up a fresh account with no GNOME-ish elements,
removing files from /var/tmp/, but nothing has helped.
One strategy I tried was to create a completely new user and log each
step in setting up the KDE environment until it crashed. This is what
happened:
- Kontact - loaded fine
- Konqueror - loaded fine
- Set filters in Kmail - fine
- Imported mail into Kmail - fine
- Applied adblocks to Konqueror - fine
- Set up Knode with Usenet account - fine
- Set up Kwallet - fine
- Fetched groups list and subscribed to groups - fine
- Amended Knode shortcuts sessions - fine
- Started Akregator and imported feeds - fine
- Installed, loaded and configured Choqok - fine
- Logged out of account with everything intact
After a GNOME session to retrieve some data I logged in again.
- started Kontact - fine
- started Konqueror - fine
- started Akregator from Kontact - CRASH
- rebooted and logged into KDE
- started Kontact - fine
- started Konqueror - CRASH
and so on...
One thing I have noticed is that a fresh KDE account will run without
trouble for some time, but that once the crashes start happening they
happen more and more quickly until a crash can almost (but not quite) be
guaranteed when I start kontact or konqueror.
I'm aware that this my be connected with my hardware setup, but I'm
anxious to know if anybody else has shared my experience and has found a
solution. For information, this is the .xsession-errors file following
the last crash:
/etc/gdm/Xsession: Beginning session setup...

I have seen a problem like this kvirc 3. I type a bunch and then it
freezes for sometime and then suddenly it does what it should have. It
only every does this one time and then no more.
8.04
Why do we live?

Well, yes, but in the case that I'm describing when it freezes it stays
frozen! It doesn't actually crash, it's as if it's got itself into a
tight little loop that it can't break out of. =20

usenet, referred heavily to the web, and done some Perl work in Kate.
No problems at all. =20
I haven't tried self-immolating by trying to load Konqueror yet, but
there is a slight suggestion that the answer may lie there. I'd remove
it altogether except that I can't without removing all of KDE with it.
I think there are a couple of rogue applications that load Konqueror
even if the SystemsSettings say otherwise.
I'm going back in there now, to add a couple more applications so see if
they cause problems.

Ha! Spoke too soon!
I logged out of my GNOME session and logged straight back into the same
account under KDE. I put in the KWallet password to load up Choqok. Then I
fired up Kontact.
CRASH!
That's another theory out of the window then.
I rebooted, and here I am in KDE again, replying on KMail (which is so much
nicer than Evolution. I closed down Choquk without invoking KWallet. I'm
going to remove the KWallet option if I can. Might also try Compiz window
manager.

Re: KDE Console freezes arbitrarily under Karmic/AMD64 - GNOME unaffected by Rosalind Mitchell on
2009-11-27T13:43:25+00:00
Yesterday the system worked almost flawlessly under KDE. The only time
it crashed was in the evening when I closed down all applications and
attempted to start Konqueror. Then, as if on cue the system froze about
two seconds into loading.
Today, on the other hand, was a nightmare. First of all it took three
or four attempts to get past the KDE startup. Then it froze two seconds
into loading Kontact. Then it worked with Kontact and Firefox runing for
all of twenty minutes before freezing in the middle of entering
something in an online form on Firefox. Then it froze when I clicked a
link from akregator.=20
I logged into Gnome and, out of curiosity, attempted to load Kontact
within Gnome. Yes, the system froze two seconds into the load. This is
the nearest thing to consistency I've found - this two seconds into
loading Kontact or Konqueror.
This is a shame, because quite frankly when it's working properly, KDE
knopcks Gnome into the proverbial cocked hat.

I was having freeze-em-up problems with Java's Wonderland client. I
finally went back to Jaunty and all works fine. No idea why, either.
