Problems with Installing Fonts, adding Transparency to TaskBar and making Dropdown Menu less "fat"

http://gnome-look.org/CONTENT/content-pre1/73210-1.jpg (i've also been
trying to make the drop down menu thinner like in this photo, any ideias
how?) . If anyone know how to solve any of these three doubts your help is
very welcome. All tutorials i found keep saying to move to a certain folder
based on a specific type of font or say to move to your "fonts directory",
and i don't know where is this folder. I tried to move artwiz-aleczapka to
/usr/share/folder but i don't know what to do after this.

Thanks.

You could try this:
http://ithingshare.blogspot.com/2009/04/improving-font-on-linux.html
http://urukrama.wordpress.com/2008/05/25/artwiz-fonts-on-ubuntu-hardy/
or simply download and install:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/dapper/xfonts-artwiz

However, I'd recommend *not* installing at all & find another set that
matches your needs - particularly since you are new to Ubuntu.
The sourceforge version was last updated in 2004:
<http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group-id=95348&package-id=101632&release-id=234471>
and the fonts were removed from hardy onward:
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xfonts-artwiz
[Deleted in hardy-release (Reason: (From Debian) RoQA; orphaned, RC-buggy)]

Installing orphaned/RC-buggy fonts is only likely to lead to trouble
later on.

i really liked it, i guess i'll avoid it then. Would you have any
suggestions about other fonts similar to this or that would go well with
that theme or any ideia about the other two questions?

Thank you very much!

Two points first:

1. Please post only in plain text on this list.
2. Please bottom post.
See:
http://www.ubuntu.com/support/community/mailinglists/etiquette
It makes life here easier :-)

I can't really offer suggestions for alternate fonts. However, you can
install fontmatrix & easily have a look through fonts installed on your
system to see if there is something to suit your needs. To install from
a terminal:

$ sudo apt-get install fontmatrix

You'll then find the program in Applications|Graphics|Fontmatrix
You can export a 'font book pdf' that you can browse through.

Note: in order to install fontmatrix, you'll need to enable your
'universe' repository. See:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu
for instructions on how to do this.

I'm not sure I fully understand your added questions, but to add
transparency to the panels: right click the panel in a blank area,
select 'Properties', click 'Background, click 'Solid color', and slide
the 'Style' bar to the transparency that you prefer.

Success in installing Ubuntu by Thomas on 2009-06-29T05:14:37+00:00

of Ubuntu. I also was able to figure out a lot of steps.

This might be of help to others:

HOW I DID IT

After getting the Ubuntu password problem fixed I was not
able to do the upgrade despite many attempts. My main
problem was not wanting to delete my e/m files. .

After a friend made me realize that there was a way out of
this problem - by putting the C hard disk in another computer
(or, as I will do, in a USB external box) and accessing it as a
secondary drive - I decided to start with a new hard drive.

This solution was complicated by the fact that the thief who
put the computer together did a RAID setup of the two hard
disks.

After a few mistakes, such as goofs like not plugging in a
cable and then into the wrong slot - I completed the hardware
change.

As suggested I installed Windows XP (replacing VISTA) and
then Ubuntu. I can upgrade back to the Vista later. I made a
mistake by making the XP's C drive only 50 GB. I had assumed
that Ubuntu would be installed on the rest of the 500 GB disk.
Instead it would only install in that 50 GB. I gave Ubuntu 25 GB.
I hope to figure out how to [do whatever] to access the rest of
the hard disk - and one of the other disks (250, or 500 GB) that
I will re-install.

After installing Ubuntu it prompted me to do an upgrade.

Not sure but my problems might have been due to the RAID
setup. I was not able to performed the suggested steps.

Have a few questions, which I'll put in a 2nd e/m note. Once I
solve the other problems I should be set to go.

My suggestion for anyone who is confronted with similar types
of problems is to consider starting with a clean computer.- ,

I was amazed at the automatic internet connection. I did not
have to do anything. Windows was never so easy.

Thanks to everyone who bothered to provide me with suggestions.

Thomas.
