See, I can't figure out how you could use the spinning cube without different
desktop wallpapers. When I spin the cube around I can't tell them apart.

The desktop page tells you which window you are in. Its not that hard

Connecting from Live CD by Steven Vollom on 2009-06-16T17:47:58+00:00
I forget who posted, sorry, but I was asked to try to connect to the Internet
and kmail using the live CD, since my computer would not connect from the
installed Jaunty application. If this gets through, I am connected using
Jaunty Live CD. Thanks!

Steven

It wasn't me who asked but that's Great!

I've had an idea. Try something else. Connect your broken computer to your modem and boot it from the hard disc (not the live CD).

Make sure KMail is not running.

Find the following files and *move* them somewhere (for example into /home/steven):
/home/steven/.kde/share/config/kmailrc
/home/steven/.kde/share/config/kmailcvtrc
/home/steven/.kde/share/config/kmail.eventsrc
(If you're using Dolphin you will have to enable View->Show Hidden Files from the menu to find the .kmail folder)
If you can't find all 3, don't worry, just make sure to move the ones that do exist.

Also find the following directory and *move* that as well (DON'T delete it, you will need it later):
/home/steven/share/apps/kmail

Now start KMail again. You will have to reconfigure it but I think you're getting quite good at that :) You will notice all your old email has also gone, but that's why you moved the folder and didn't delete it.

Try sending another email and see if it works. I'm working on the guess that your kmail configuration is corrupt. This will remove it and allow you to recreate it. If it sorts out the problem then we'll work on getting your saved email back. If it doesn't work, put the files and the folder back where they started from and we'll have another think.

Mark.

That was me.
I just want to be sure the problem is with the software, not hardware.
The next step is to open terminal and run below command:

ifconfig

Give me the output when you run the live cd and when you run from harddiks.

When you run live cd, it is connected through eth2.

Boot from harddisk, open ternimal and issue:

gksudo gedit /etc/network/interfaces

add below lines:

auto eth2
iface eth0 inet dhcp

Save and close the text editor, and run in terminal:

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

After that, check again ifconfig, see whether eth2 now already up. If
it is up, you should be able to connect internet.

The only thing I couldn't do is move a file named /kmailcvtrc, I did not have
that file. When completed, I opened and reconfigured kmail. I could not use
the feature (What the server recommends, because I am unable to get a
connection through router or modem to the ISP, so I made the proper selections
and tried to open kmail. I got the same error message I have been getting,
Unknown Host pop.att.yahoo.com.

I am going to wait for instructions, because both configuration entries are the
same I believe and I hope it doesn't matter which I remove when this is all
over. As far as the moved data, do I just put it back where it was or do I
rename the entries that are currently functioning and then return the moved
files back.

Is there any possibility that the fact that I do not have /kmailcvtrc that
that could be causing the problem??

Hi Steven,

You should move all the files back where they were. Kmail will have now created new versions of them but you can safely overwrite those. Make sure KMail is not running when you do this.

What we've proved here is that the problem is not with your KMail configuration, so you very probably have a network configuration problem - others are already helping you with this.

The kmailcvtrc file is very unlikely to be anything to do with it. So I would now follow the advice Thomas Olsen has been giving you.

Thanks Mark. It is great to eliminate possibilities. I was so confident that
configuration was right, it was difficult to broach the subject over and over.
You are most appreciated.

gksudo is not currently installed, and I can not install because I am not able
to connect. Shoot, and that sounded like it may work. I never had cause to
use that application yet, so it was not installed. Thanks for trying; you are
terrific.

Is there any way to download something like that to a folder and create a live
CD with it. It is probably a crazy thought, but it passed through the cobwebs
of my mind and exited my through my hands. There have been several things I
could not try due to lack of connection. I have been trying to figure out way
to get applications to a state of live CD, where I can install them like we
did with Sindoze.

It is quite strange it is not install. You could try gksu instead of gksudo:

gksu gedit /etc/network/interfaces

If it is not install as well, then use sudo nano:

sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces

add:

auto eth2
iface eth2 inet dhcp

after that <ctrl> O to save it, and <ctrl>x to exit nano.

then run in terminal

sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart.

Actually, he sends multipart/alternative. So it's the recipient who choos=
es
which version to display.

No it's not strange. Steven has KDE.. he should try 'kdesudo kate' to open an editor as root, which I think he already knows about

This is new for me David. The first 'a' of 'auto lo' was highlighted after I
opened sudo nano /etc/network/interfaces. I pressed the down arrow and made
the addition; it looks like this:

auto lo until there was a space between:
iface lo inet loopback
address 127.0.0.1
netmask 255.0.0.0

auto eth2
iface eth2 inet dhcp

It looked like you made a 'ctrl O' or the large letter 'O" not the number
zero, so I pressed 'ctrl <the caps key>O' nothing appeared to happen. I then
pressed 'ctrl x', again nothing appeared to happen.

I don't think it was saved, or that ctrl x exited me, because the window that
appears like a shell remained. The 'file' menu did not show a save option. I
closed the window usiing the X in the upper right corner.

I opened Dolphin and went to /etc/network/interfaces and checked, and it was
not saved. I then opened kdesudo kate and edited the interfaces entry by
making the addition you suggested. I clicked on save and closed the
application.

The current ifconfig is:

steven@Yeshua:~$ ifconfig
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0d:88:1c:a7:71

I tried again to send and receive an email. I got the same error:

Unknown Host pop.att.yahoo.com

I rechecked Kmail configuration and confirmed that it is correct. I have done
this same step with Eberhard, Hein and others. As a last minute check before
sending, I rechecked interfaces and they are as you requested. I rechecked
Kmail configuration again. Perfice. Everything has been tripple checked.

The connection each time has been direct from the broken computer to the DSL
modem. Thanks!

Steven

Actually, I don't know how that happened. I checked and found the HTML
checked. I did not do that, so I don't even know when it started. I have
returned it to the way I usually have it. I just checked and it still is NOT
checked. I am sorry.

Hi Doc,

Did you get the last email as text only? That is the way I have always had it

I used kdesudo kate and made the edit. It is done, but had no affect on
connecting to the internet. Same response Unknown User.

Thanks for sticking in there. I really want to solve the problem.

No. I got the same error message, Unknown Host. I also confirmed my host
setting with AT&T. So my configuration is correct on that point. All
configuration in the mail program for this laptop I am successfully sending
messages on is exactly the same in the busted box. thanks!

On the damaged ubuntu, could you try open terminal and then:

ping 64.233.189.100

What is the result?

I can't remember how to do that. I did a google search and couldn't
understand the conversation surrounding it. I couldn't find a place where it
was simply explained. I have done it before, it just has been too long ago,
and I have not done it often enough to remember yet. I am sorry.

I have made a connection using a browser using an alternate Router and the
laptop. I was unable to send an email, but was able to browse. After
receiving this email, I connected the Router to the Modem/Router and the
Router to the laptop and was able to surf the Internet, but when I attempte to
send this email, it would not send. I reconnected the laptop directly to the
Modem/Router and am sending it now.

I feel a bit silly, but I typed the address in the command line and pinged the
address, it said Sndmssg: operation not permitted.

Might be a problem with iptable/firewall.
How about if you just reinstall kubuntu from scratch? May be much
easier and faster than trouble shooting.
