Hello All -
After much deliberation the jQuery team has decided to close down the
Google Groups that we've been using for project discussion and move to
a unified forum instead.
The new forum can be found here:
http://forum.jquery.com/
More information about our decision to move can be found here:
http://jquery14.com/day-07/new-jquery-forum
If you have any questions concerning the move please feel free to post
them in the new meta discussion forum here:
http://forum.jquery.com/about-the-jquery-forum
Thanks for your continued support and here's to future community discussions!

It is a good idea to create a forum. But it is not a good idea to close the
JQuery mailing lists.
Spammed or not, some of the users might prefer to continue to use the
mailing lists, and not the forum, which is hard accessible for some users.
If the lists will get too much spam, and the users don't use an email
provider that takes care of that spam from their mailboxes, any user is free
to unsubscribe from the lists and use only the forum.
But maybe some of the users might want to use them both, or only the mailing
lists, so why killing the mailing lists?
Octavian
(Hoping that the JQuery mailing listt will continue to exist.)

Hi Octavian,
I'm just a user, not associated with the Jquery guys, so maybe they
have a better answer, but they described the problem in full on the
web link he gave out earlier.
Part of the problem is that it is completely unmanageable for them -
there are 21,000 users on the list.
JQuery guys:
Perhaps an autoresponder that states that the post will not be
answered due to shutdown, a brief description of why, and a pointer to
the forum?

The answers to the questions on the JQuery mailing lists are not sent by the
JQuery mailing list owners, so why should they tell us that our questions
won't be answered?
If the lists are not "maintained", it means that they will be probably
spammed hard, but as I said, many list members would prefer reading a
spammed mailing list than an inaccessible forum.
(Because a forum will be always much less accessible for a screen reader
used by a blind computer user than a mailing list.)

I'm new here, subscribed just 2 or 3 days ago. I am distressed by this
announcement. Here's why:
My experience with forums is, they send out an announcement when a new
thread is posted, then require you to log in before you receive further
announcements on that thread. Even if I log in, I have to stay logged
in to follow the thread or keep logging in to get announcements on new
replies being posted.
Whereas, with an email list, I receive everything that is posted and I
can review it at my leisure, after the crisis of the moment or of the
day has been attended to. I don't have to log in and squat on a forum
in order to stay abreast of all the replies.
You said the provider is attending to your concerns so my question is:
will they send announcements on everything or, will this despicable
"log in to stay updated" rigamarole win out yet again?

I asked, how will announcements of new posts to the forum be handled?
Does anyone have an answer yet?

Many of those advantages are advantages only for the mailing list admins and
not for the users, and the disadvantages are too big for some users.
But as I said, it is normal for everyone to decide to make his/her life as
easy as possible, and it is normal that the mailing lists admins took this
decision, but please don't kill the mailing lists, because even if they
won't be administered anymore and if they will be hardly spammed, they are a
much better medium than a forum.
A Mercedes is better than an Opel, but if I would provide you a Mercedes
with only one door, I don't think you'll like it, although I can show more
advantages for it. :-)
Thanks.

Just my 0.2 in order to contribute to the ongoing discussion:
I think that there're advantages to both approaches, forum and mailing list.
The main advantage of a mailing list, especially for people using
Gmail like me, is that emails are searchable in a
much simpler and easier way than a forum.
Searches are most likely to be faster, because they're local to the
user instead of being queries to the forum database.
Forums, on the other side, provide a much easier categorization,
backup, structure.
Most advanced forums allow you to receive emails only for topics of
interest and they allow to
have a much easier view of the whole discussion(something that emails
will *never* be able to provide).
Emails have the advantage(as someone said) to be blind friendly,
surely much more than an Ajax forum.
Ideally, some respected member of the JQuery community may take over
the management of the group or having a "JQuery SWAT", so to say which
will delete spam messages.
Ideally, the forum could provide an NNTP interface as well.
Best Regards,
Andrew

Please don't remember anything about RSS, because RSS can't be used for
posting a message to the forum.
If a user is subscribed to 10 mailing lists, then he or she needs to
remember just a single username and a single password, but if he or she is
subscribed to 10 forums, needs to remember 10 URLS and usernames and
passwords, and he or she also will need to get used to use 10 different
designs, so it is not easier at all.
But maybe I am uninformed and there is a way of posting messages to the
forum without log in each time. Is it possible?
I think that a half-solution could be something like:
1. To be able to use an easy to remember address like forum.jquery.org.
2. After visiting that page, to appear a form with a big standard
field, and a standard submit button, without needing to login at all.
The login could be done once and the session could be kept for a year or so,
and if the users browsers send a cookie with the appropriate session ID,
they should be considered logged on.
That could be a half of a half of solution, because the users might forget
their password if they don't use it as often as the password for email, or
they could forget the URL and it will take some time to find it, and there
is no solution for getting all the messages from the list with an accessible
RSS client.
Wouldn't be more simple to have an email address on Gmail, that takes care
of SPAM, no matter if it comes from the JQuery mailing lists or from other
sources? (or on another email provider that have a good antispam program?)
I don't know if the JQuery mailing lists were spammed and then manually
cleaned, but I know that I have a Gmail email account and I don't receive
almost any spam, although now I can see almost 1000 spam messages in my SPAM
folder.

I was answering the question of receiving new notification, not posting a
message to the forum. I hope we can get to a point where email could be used
to post new messages to the forum. But that's not possible today.

You don't have to convince me that subscribing to a mailing list is an
easier way to receive thousands of messages a month from multiple mailing
lists. There are compromises, and this is one. Instead of a mailing list
server remembering that you want to receive all those messages, a web
browser or rss client remembers. Again, this is pull vs. push. I tell you
what, it sure is easier to unsubscribe now. You can just not visit the
bookmark, or not click on the folder in the rss client, or unsubscribe in
the rss client, or delete the bookmark. You may not have any trouble
unsubscribing from mailing lists, but there used to be a couple of messages
every week to the jquery-en mailing list saying 'unsubscribe'. 25,000 people
don't need to get that email message. This would often be followed up be a
lengthy back-and-forth discussion about some of the ways a user can
unsubscribe from the list, either via email (to the correct address) or via
the web site. That's a lot of noise, and it increased as the number of new
users increased.

If we're trying to reduce the amount of moderation needed to keep spam down,
I don't think allowing for anonymous posting is going to help much. As far
as urls and usernames and passwords, web browsers are pretty good at
remembering those kinds of things so users don't have to. The forum should
remember that the user is logged in as well, if the 'Keep me signed in' box
is checked when logging in. I've heard that currently isn't working for some
users (don't know the specifics), but I'm sure that will be fixed. For me, I
use my gmail login to log into forum.jquery.com, and I always stay logged
into my gmail. So when I go to the forum, I just have to click 'Log-in' and
then the gmail icon and I'm in. I don't have to even type in my username.
Not because my browser remembers it, but because of openid. I'd prefer if I
didn't even have to click 'Log-in'. I hope that is something that can get
fixed as well, so I'm always logged into the forum, even if I close my
browser.

I was always amazed at how much spam we had to deal with as google groups
moderators, given that gmail does such an outstanding job of keeping spam
out. It's a shame the technology isn't better shared between those two. The
only reasonable way we had to deal with it was to moderate first posts from
every user, which doesn't scale well, and frustrates users. John went into
quite a bit of detail on this, so I won't repeat it:

Ok, I understand better now. I am talking about apples and you were talking
about pears. :-)
You are talking about the accessibility for the admins and I am talking
about the accessibility and friendlyness for the users.
That beeing said, I will try to adapt to the new conditions, because a
mailing list/forum never was a democratic place where the best solution are
used, but a place where those who make the effort of maintaining and
providing help should decide.
I have tried to create an account on the forum, but I don't even know what I
need to do.
I have visited the forum, I didn't see a "Subscribe" or "Join" or a link
like that, so I accessed the "Log In" link.
(By the way, forum.jquery.com works very slow).
But the page that appeared contains just a common login form, with no link
or button for joining.
I have seen that it also contains a frame with the only text
"Loading...Please wait" and a "Continue" button. I pressed that button, but
it returned to the URL forum.jquery.com/#AllForums
Am I missing something?
Thank you.

Ok, I have used "Login to Participate" although it is hard accessible
because it is a simple text, not a link and not a form button so it is
impossible to know that it is a text that should be clicked.
But finally I was able to access the form for creating the user, however
that form is completely inaccessible, because it uses Captcha, an old
variant of Captcha that don't even offer a sound version, so it is not
accessible at all for blind users.
(And by the way, a page that contains more than 200 links) is never friendly
because it is very hard to navigate using the keyboard only, and it is also
very slow responsive.)
A forum is always worse than a mailing list, but this specific forum is one
of the worst I've seen.
Too bad that a good JS lib like JQuery should use a medium like this.

Does it matter? And I hope we all are. Web sites, like all things (software,

He's trying to use the forum we convinced him is worth trying as it's the
new official way of getting support from the jQuery project and he can't!
That's a pretty serious issue, and I wouldn't fault him for that.

I'm truly sorry you found what you did. We've got an open channel with the
service provider and they're committed to improving the system based on user
feedback. I'm certain this is a large and diverse group of new users we've
given them, and that can certainly help the software improve. Accessibility
is an especially high priority for me, and I know I'm not alone. I'll make
sure it stays at the top of the list that we've got them looking into.
Thanks for your patience and understanding.

Having malining list access on the forum imho poses a tremendous
problem: it's fine when you read, but how's the system supposed to
"point" the message to the correct thread? If you think about it a
minute, you'll see that there could be a problem.
NNTP is, imho, blind friendly and at the same time standard giivng

Octavian,
I misunderstood your email as another attempt to convince them to
keep the list. After doing some research, I see that, in fact, you
are. Please accept my most sincere apologies.

I misunderstood your email as another attempt to convince them to
keep the list. After doing some research, I see that, in fact, you
are. Please accept my most sincere apologies.

Hi Clayton,
No problem. I accept your apologies. It is true that it was an argument for
convincing them, however it was a real argument unfortunately.
I'm a web developer and I create web sites, so I don't hate the web
interface, but if it limits even more my limited access... it is not very
pleasant.

I haven't read all of your arguments here, but I would definitely say that =
a
forum is not really that nice of an idea.
The advantage of having a mailing list, is that I do NOT have to login to
several pages or forums to get access. I have ONE unified place for it all,
my mail, which I happen to check everyday and I can read upon whenever I
want. I do not have to learn a new page, set up anything or any of that
bullshit that comes with it.
Now, had this been a forum, I would never just have clicked on the Gmail
label to see what's up and write. I would actually have to make an effort t=
o
go to the forum, log in and such.
This way, it's much much easier to get access and be active. I just
subscribed three days ago.
Forums are pass=E9. The new shit is mailing lists. When I can subscribe to=
a
forum AND respond to it right from my daily login ( my email ), it just
seems pretty crazy to make that harder by moving to a forum.
jQuery is about making it easier.
Make sure people find out how to subscribe to this mailing list instead.
Many new developers aren't that familiar with the concept. I wasn't 15
months ago, and now I just love it. It's hundred times better than a forum.
Forums should move to mailing lists.
